A saddening fact of the genocide was
the terrible and systematic raping of the Tutsis women. Sometimes the
only survivors’ of entire families,the victims of rape were left
with the awful legacy of HIV and AIDS. Over a quarter of a million people
are thought to be infected today in Rwanda and most don’t have
access to the simple, affordable drugs which could save their lives
or lessen their suffering.
The country’s infrastructure still needs more investment to improve
healthcare and make it available on a local level in the poorest regions.
